Head’s Up: About Lice and Nits

Head lice are small, wingless insects that feed on human blood from the scalp. They’re a nuisance, but not dangerous, and treatable. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Lice vs. Nits: Adult lice are tiny (think sesame seed size) and move quickly, making them tricky to spot. Nits are the lice eggs, which look like small bumps attached to hair shafts, often near the scalp. They can be yellow, tan, or brown and are easier to see than lice.

  • Signs of Lice: The itch is the biggest giveaway. Lice bites can cause intense itching on the scalp, neck, and shoulders. You might also see lice or nits themselves.

  • Treatment: Over-the-counter and prescription medications can kill lice and nits. Wet combing with a special lice comb is another way to remove them. Be sure to follow the treatment instructions carefully.

  • Don’t Panic: Lice aren’t a sign of poor hygiene, and they don’t spread disease. However, they are contagious and can spread through head-to-head contact or sharing personal items like hats or brushes.
